5 Eco-Friendly DIY Decor Ideas

cd wall art

So many décor ideas have been played out at corporate events. Below are five Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ideas that are fun, save some money and add cool factor to the event.

phone charging station

PHONE CHARGING STATION

Use an old bookcase or mail sorter to create a phone charging station.

Drill holes into each slot or every few inches along a bookcase. Paint the station a funky color or keep it bare (depending on the theme of your event).

After it dries insert multiple charging cords (iPhone & Android) from the back and plug them into a charging strip.  You may want to consider adding a clip or weight to stop the cords from falling through the hole.

You can do-it-up and create a valet system with an attendant or a free-for-all with self-charging.

crowd source art at events

CROWD-SOURCED INTERACTIVE ART

Most companies have left-over banners from trade shows or old backdrops with an old logo on it. Re-use these banners, just flip them around to the backside for a clean white backdrop to add ‘art’ by your attendees.

Hang it up against a wall or place it on tables for guests to decorate. Also, provide a separate table with markers & other decorative items. Just make sure the decorative items won’t be messy and get on their clothing (unless that’s what you’re going for).

It’s strongly recommended to give some direction like ‘write your favorite quote,’ ‘create a new super hero and draw them,’ ‘draw your favorite animal.’ Also, give other directions like don’t use the same colors as the drawing/words next to your art.

It’s a great social media photo opp so make sure to add your social media handles and hashtag to the banner.

glass jars repurposed

REPURPOSED JARS

Glass condiment jars (i.e. pickles, salsa, jam, etc.) are excellent to reuse as small vases for flowers or candles.

Recycle the tops, remove the labels by soaking in water and clean out to remove that pickle smell. If you want to add decorative accents, try adding dots or a pattern with a marker of any color (make sure it doesn’t rub off), or add twine or ribbons.

Then add either votive candles or flowers and bunch them together for a beautiful effect. Best thing, toss the glass containers into the recycle bin after the event (remove the candle wax first - easiest once the candles are cold).

CD used as artwork

‘MIRRORED’ WALL

Do you have stacks of old CDs or DVDs that are sitting in the office supply cabinet? I’m sure we all do as disk drives have gone by the wayside.

Re-use them to make a “mirrored” wall display.  Apply an adhesive to the side of CD with writing and attach it to the wall (if the venue gives you approval). If the venue has restrictions, they may allow painters tape as it’s a low adhesive tape that won’t ruin a wall.

Other Uses: beverage coasters, adhesive the CDs on to a table, tapered candle holders, string them up as garland (this would require puncturing and painting one-side).

After the event, disassemble, stack and re-use for another event.

chalk art signs

CHALK ART SIGNAGE

Rather than printing directional signage for attendees to find the event when outside, use your child’s (now unused) sidewalk chalk to create artful looking big arrows and witty/funny statements* to woo attendees to the event space.

If you want to go big, there are some amazing chalk artists that can create fantastic signs.

* Have someone review the statements if you’re unsure before putting it in chalk.
